A man does not resent this tenancy.
He accepts his heritage is gathered from many histories.
Some have been seen and others told, and more
Passed on from too far back to know.
So
Forget an uncle’s nose, a cousin’s hesitations,
ancient prowess in the nerves.
All are borrowed for a confluence in time
So that a man
(who did not ask to live)
May stand erect and say
“I am”

Flesh to be returned to the common pool
When the tenancy’s run:
       Check.
